This timeline will help you step into the shoes of a student and learn what your Lumerit journey will look like.

This is when your educational construction crew begins to lay the foundation for your degree. During this process, you’ll plan out your entire college experience down to the last credit.

“What’s an academic consultation and why do I need it?”

We’re glad you asked. Your academic consultation is quite possibly the most important step you can take in your self-directed degree. Basically, you get to sit down with a professional nerd who knows everything about college, courses, and costs. You tell them which school you want to attend and what degree you want to earn, and then they help you settle the particulars: what’s your budget? When do you want to graduate? Etc.

During this process, they’ll find as many ways as possible to save you time and money on your degree.

Once both you and your consultant have a good view of where you’re coming from and where you’re going, you’ll fill in your customized degree plan with courses which help you graduate as quickly as possible and keep from going bankrupt in the process.

The blueprint you create during this process will tell you exactly how long your degree will take to finish and how much it will cost before you even get started. No surprises.

Your Academic Life Coach is your own personal Obi-Wan. Their job is to successfully guide you through the crazy (awesome) process that is your self-directed degree.

Your coach will begin your relationship by helping you lay the groundwork for your education and life beyond college. Together you’ll answer questions like:

  • What degree are you earning?
  • How quickly do you want to finish?
  • Do you have life or career goals you would like to accomplish while earning your degree?

Once you understand the big picture, you can start digging into the details. What does your next month look like? What about the next two weeks? Those tiny stepping stones add up and are what eventually propel you into success.

“What does a coaching call look like, practically speaking?”

That depends entirely on you. But here’s a rough outline that your first calls may resemble:

If you already know what degree you want, you and your coach will pour over your Degree Manager and Course Timing (two online features included in your Unbound enrollment), and you’ll put every credit into its proper place. Then you’ll set your first study goals. And your coach will keep you accountable for these, so study hard!

If you don’t know what degree you want, you and your coach will set goals focused less on coursework and more on helping you figure out what you want out of life. You might decide to buy some extra time by getting an early start on a general education course while you consider your degree options, but mostly your coach will focus on you. Your passions, your skills, your interests. Much of this personality-surveying, degree-choosing process will be completed via the Navigate program.

If you don’t know what degree you want, or don’t have the slightest idea what to do with yourself after college, you’ll take a life-changing 9-week detour through Navigate.

This interactive online application will guide you, step-by-step, toward answering the all-important, future-encompassing question: what is my life purpose?

Answering this single question can feel like going up against a 326 lb. sumo wrestler with nothing more than a pair of chopsticks for defense. The question of purpose is so knee wobbling, we often choose to ignore it in hopes it will do the same for us. After all, it’s a heck of a lot bigger than questions like “what degree should I get?” and “what career do I want?”

But very much like that 326 lb. sumo wrestler, this question can’t be ignored. And it’s only after claiming victory—finding your purpose—that the answers to smaller, more tangible questions of job and degree will fall into place.

“How can an online application help me find my life purpose?”

The process is extensive, but not complicated. With the help of dozens of well-equipped individuals like Dewey Novotny (author of Life Purpose Planning) and Jeff Myers (leadership guru at Summit Ministries) and many Lumerit coaches, you’ll answer the hard questions:

  • What are my strengths and weaknesses?
  • What natural tendencies do I rely on every day?
  • What energizes me? De-energizes me?
  • When do I feel fulfilled?
  • And many more…

By answering these questions, you will gain a clear map of the path you’re on. With your coach’s help, you’ll take note of where you’ve been and what you want, then you’ll create a 5-year plan to guide you through college and beyond.

Fortunately, with the dozens of interesting videos, engaging reading, and interactive worksheets, what sounds like a dull process is actually buckets of fun!

This is where it gets real. Here you start truly earning the degree you’ve carefully chosen and planned.

Fact: Lumerit’s online courses are a bajillion times more efficient than anything you can find at any college ever. At least, we think so.

These are self-paced courses, which means you don’t have to wait for the slowest student. You don’t have to fall asleep during—I mean listen to hour-long lectures on topics you already understand. Read, listen, or skim your way through your lessons and take tests and quizzes whenever you’re ready.

It’s called competency-based learning. Which means you’re not awarded credit for the length of time your bum touches a seat. You’re awarded credit for what you know. That means the dedicated student (and if you’re in the Unlimited program, you’re definitely dedicated) can finish even more quickly than the standard 8-week deadline each course allows.

As an added bonus, you’ll get to take two of our Signature Leadership Courses for no extra cost.

Are you looking to work in a leadership role? Let me ask that more clearly: do you plan on having a family? Serving your church? Directing your teammates toward victory when you’re assigned unreasonable deadlines?

There’s more to leadership than being the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, or even just “telling people what to do.” (That’s actually… really bad leadership.)

These Signature Leadership courses set you apart by helping you build practical skills that will make you an effective leader in any setting.

What was once the holy grail of Unbound is now simply an added bonus. We’ve got the tools you need to crush your credit-by-exam, if that’s the kind of learning you’re into.

Essentially, the credit-by-examination method consists of using knowledge you already have (brushing up on what you don’t remember, of course) and passing a single subject-encompassing exam to prove you know your stuff. Alternatively, the bold student can start from scratch and master the subject on her own, making a teacher and homework irrelevant.

If you pass your exam, you get credit for that subject. No grades, no classroom politics. You either know the material, or you don’t.

We provide everything you need pre-test, like study guides for every exam and online flashcards to help you solidify your knowledge of the most popular CLEP subjects.

In addition, many of our coaches have taken (and passed) these exams, and all of them have helped students do the same, so they’re an invaluable resource through your study process.

Of course, while the exam method is cheaper and faster than taking courses, we’re the first to admit that it’s not for everyone. That’s why we offer Spotlight, an online assessment to help you figure out if credit-by-exam is for you before adding it to your degree.

Our students are some of the coolest people you’ll ever meet. They don’t bond over a random class they happened to share that one semester. They, like you, are innovative, inspired individuals who refuse to settle. Instead they actively seek out how they can do college (and life) on their terms. Together.

This incredible community will not only keep you company during the sometimes lonely degree-earning process, but will also inspire you to make the most out of your time as a Unbound.

Unbounds meet regularly both in person and online. One place they like to hang out is (quite appropriately) on Google Hangouts. Every two weeks students gather online in what they call Empower Groups, online meetups which help friends across the country push each other toward their goals.

Facebook and YouTube are also places our students make their presence known. Here our Unbounds discuss any topic, issue, struggle, and/or idea they have burning inside them. They celebrate wins and mourn losses together as one family.

And APEX—the Unbounds’ yearly student conference—brings everyone together under one roof. Planned by students for students, this event is centered around not just meeting and greeting and having a good time, but also building applicable, real-life skills with fellow students.

After all, life’s about so much more than just school.

What do a building, a road trip, and a bachelor’s degree have in common? They all start with a plan… at least, the successful ones do. During your academic consultation, you’ll plan out your entire college experience down to the last credit.

Just as there are thousands of decisions to consider when outlining the construction of a skyscraper (all of which affect the structural integrity of the building), there are hundreds of pitfalls to avoid in degree planning. In order to build your perfect degree—one that jives with your learning style while saving you as much money as possible—you’ll need help.

That’s why your academic consultation is quite possibly the most important step you can take in your self-directed degree. This consultation allows you to sit down with a professional nerd who knows everything about college, courses, and costs. You tell them what school you want to attend and what degree you want to earn, and then they help you settle the particulars: what’s your budget? Are you planning to live on campus, or go fully online? Etc.

They’ll use your answers to start building a perfect degree plan, one that gives you only as much flexibility as you want while saving you thousands of dollars.

Once both you and your consultant have a good view of where you’re coming from and where you’re going, you’ll fill in your customized degree plan with courses which suit your learning style and keep from going bankrupt in the process.

You’ll finish this process with a blueprint for your degree, including how long it will take to finish, and exactly how much it will cost before you even get started. No surprises.

Your Academic Life Coach will allow you to hit the ground running. In the 3 months you work together, your coach will get you into a credit-earning routine that can’t be stopped.

Before you jump into your self-directed degree, your coach will help you lay the groundwork for both your education and your life beyond college. For instance, how quickly do you want to finish your degree? Do you have life or career goals you would like to accomplish in the meantime?

They’ll help you create a big picture before you dig into the details. What does your next month look like? What about the next two weeks? These tiny stepping stones add up and are what eventually propel you into success. In three months, your coach will get you in the habit of laying these steps yourself.

If you already know what degree you want, you and your coach will pour over your Degree Manager and Course Timing (two features included in your Unbound enrollment) and plan every credit in advance. After all, you’ll be flying solo soon enough. You’ll need to get in the habit of setting regular bi-monthly study goals, so that’s exactly what you’ll do. And your coach will keep you accountable for these, so study hard!

If you don’t know what degree you want, you and your coach will set goals focused less on coursework and more on helping you figure out what you want out of life. You might decide to buy some time by getting an early start on a general education course while you mull over degree options (gotta get into the study habit), but mostly your coach will focus on you—your passions, your skills, your interests. This is where it gets real. Here you start truly earning the degree you’ve carefully chosen and planned.

Some folks enjoy being talked at by lecturers who get to their point more slowly than an ice cube melts in the north pole. But most… don’t.

That’s why we offer plenty of self-paced courses for you to choose from which will fit your learning style. You can read, listen, or skim your way through the material you need to learn and take as much (or as little) time as you need to complete each section.

It’s called competency-based learning. Which means you’re not awarded credit for you long your bum touches a seat. You’re awarded credit for what you know. That means while you may spend the same amount of time at your desk as a traditional college student would, you’ll pack more learning into that time, which means you’ll finish your degree that much faster.

By this point in your degree, you’ve completed a course or two, maybe taken a test, and generally have the hang of things. Now you’ll fly solo, with just a monthly touch-in from your coach to keep you on track.

After your first three months, a Success Coach will take the place of your Academic Life Coach. While you’ll be largely autonomous in your creditorial pursuits (you’re responsible for setting your own goals, deciding when it’s time to move on to the next test, etc), your Success Coach will step in once a month to make sure your head is still above water.

They’ll be able to help you through any problem you may be struggling with at the moment, as well as make sure you’re still directed solidly toward your goal.

Pro tip: if you decide you want the full benefit of bi-montly calls with your Academic Life Coach, we’ll work that out for you, albeit for an extra fee. But let’s keep this strictly between you and me, okay?

Busy people don’t have time to drive to a school, sit in a lecture, drive home, do homework, drive back, turn it in, etc. Especially not for an entire 12-week semester. And if you’re a Flex student, chances are you’re indeed busy with activities that are way more interesting than school.

Though we do our best to get you the most accurate estimate up front, the best way to calculate your expected costs is to meet with one of our Admissions Advisors to talk about your specific situation.
